I’ve never seen anyone say that cosplaying and fandom in general is immature. I really haven’t. I’ve seen people that say they think it’s weird, but I’ve never heard someone say, “Hey man instead of doing that you should be out getting drunk and shit!!!!”

I hate the whole argument that you shouldn’t have to have drugs to have a good time. I know how to have a good time sober, but I also like to smoke and drink here and there. It’s also fun.

Why are people who abstain from using drugs so hateful towards anyone who uses them for recreation? Why are you trying to tell other people what they should be doing with their lives? I don’t go around giving you a hard time for not doing them. I don’t tell you that the only way to have a good time is to get wasted. There are assholes that say shit like that, but there are many people that do drugs that aren’t like that at all.

It’s none of my business what drugs someone does or doesn’t do, and I don’t even care to know. Why are people so smug when they say they don’t need drugs to have fun? No one cares if you don’t do drugs. Both ways are fine ways to entertain yourself, but just because I smoke and drink occasionally does not mean I need to grow the fuck up. It doesn’t make me immature.

This is another of those posts like the last one I just did.

No one’s ever said “Stop cosplaying, grow up and go drink some beer!” But I’d be willing to bed the “grow up” response to cosplaying is definitely there for most people.

I, for one, can’t tell you how many times my dad has said “when are you going to grow up and stop watching cartoons and playing video games?” I don’t cosplay, but I can’t imagine how much worse my dad would react if I did.

So I can definitely see where the top left portion of this picture is coming from.

I can’t pretend to know why they singled out alcohol and drug use when they made this picture, but if I really think about it, when I think of cosplayers and anime fans, they tend to be “nerds”, or at least the ones I’ve known, and while I’m sure many of them do drink, mostly they just seem to be nerds who don’t behave like those in the bottom right of the above picture.

My dad, for instance, will talk for hours about how he was drunk every day when he was my age. He’s also a big sports fan and just that typical, cliched guy who (if he had gone to college, you can bet he would have spent it drunk and at parties (Though I’ve heard stories of many parties he was at in high school).

I think it’s just likely that most of us nerds who like anime and video games and all of that probably were bullied a lot in grade school by the “cool kids,” the jocks, the kids going to all the parties and getting wasted. The above picture is probably some poor person who was picked on by the sort of people in the bottom right and this is just them venting some rage.

That being said, drinking IS perfectly normal in popular culture. I mean, it’s pretty hard to find movies or tv shows where alcohol isn’t being drank at some point or another. Pretty much everyone drinks at some point, myself excluded.

But if you really think about it, the kind of drinking pictured in this picture does show a level of immaturity on the part of drinkers. Of course, not everyone is that way, but you can never make a generalization that fits everyone. We all know that there are those people in high school or college who go to all the parties, get wasted all the time, act like idiots and everyone loves them for it. Despite how immature it is.

But cosplayers, nerds in general, get nothing but looked down on because of the things we really enjoy.

I think the point this picture really makes is that nerds are constantly told to grow up and stop liking the things they like, but no one ever tells drinkers that they’re being immature and need to grow up and be more responsible.

I feel like this is the same situation as the religious one. Where christians get all up in arms if you say a single word against their religion because we’re “waging a war on christianity”. The truth is, christians NEVER get attacked, they’ve spent the last 2000 years on top, getting everything they want and ripping apart anyone who doesn’t agree. An atheist comes along and says “I don’t believe and I’d like equal rights” and suddenly there’s some war on religion?

I feel like this picture is similar to that. Like, if this picture offends you because you like to drink, maybe you should step back and think about your situation a little bit. This is, what, the first time you’ve been attacked for liking to drink this month? I guarantee many nerds get attacked all day every day that they go to school. Most nerds have been attacked several times in their days, unless they hide it. No one’s out making a drinker’s life hard because they like to drink.

So stop getting butt hurt just because there’s this one instance.

Wait until you’re getting wedgies and stuffed in lockers and stuff for being an alcoholic. Then maybe I’ll feel some pity for your victimization.

And just a final note, I can’t speak for anyone else, but cosplay or being whatever kind of nerd, doesn’t get anyone killed, it doesn’t hurt anyone (not even yourself). But things like alcohol lead to countless deaths each year, whether it’s someone ending up with alcohol poisoning or driving drunk and crashing into someone else’s car and killing everyone in it. And several other drugs also cause death.

That’s always been my big reason for hating alcohol and drugs. If it was purely you destroying yourself, I wouldn’t care. If that’s how you want to live your life, fine. But alcoholics and druggies have a tendency to take others down with them.

My black lungs have my grandmother’s and my uncle’s cigarette smoking to thank, for example.

Anyway, I’ve been rambling about fuck knows what for like an hour now, I’m going to shut up.
